[#23] Book Review: Wither by Lauren DeStefano

Wither
(The Chemical Garden #1)

Wither (The Chemical Garden, #1)

Synopsis

By age sixteen, Rhine Ellery has four years left to live. She can thank modern science for this genetic time bomb. A botched effort to create a perfect race has left all males with a lifespan of 25 years, and females with a lifespan of 20 years. Geneticists are seeking a miracle antidote to restore the human race, desperate orphans crowd the population, crime and poverty have skyrocketed, and young girls are being kidnapped and sold as polygamous brides to bear more children. When Rhine is kidnapped and sold as a bride, she vows to do all she can to escape. Her husband, Linden, is hopelessly in love with her, and Rhine can’t bring herself to hate him as much as she’d like to. He opens her to a magical world of wealth and illusion she never thought existed, and it almost makes it possible to ignore the clock ticking away her short life. But Rhine quickly learns that not everything in her new husband’s strange world is what it seems. Her father-in-law, an eccentric doctor bent on finding the antidote, is hoarding corpses in the basement. Her fellow sister wives are to be trusted one day and feared the next, and Rhine is desperate to communicate to her twin brother that she is safe and alive. Will Rhine be able to escape--before her time runs out?

Together with one of Linden's servants, Gabriel, Rhine attempts to escape just before her seventeenth birthday. But in a world that continues to spiral into anarchy, is there any hope for freedom?

Review

Wither... Hell, why did I try to delay reading this book? This is a wonderful book, and I feel sorry that I didn't read it the moment I got my hands on it. Here's the summary of this review: if you love YA dystopians, then this book is absolutely made for you. I wish I could just end this review that way because for real, that's all, read it and find out for yourselves, but hey, I have so much to say, and this book kept me from reading my midterm reviewers, so bear with my rants. *lol*

The premise of this book was awesome, kind of reminded me of Shatter Me's. Anyway, I already mentioned that I didn't read this book right away, it practically been on my shelf for months. I didn't expect to like this book as much as I did. The synopsis was to be blame for that, aside from giving a creepy impression, it had a scific sound which I really didn't like. And the brother thing was not something to be excited about. So what happens to the old saying 'don't judge a book by its cover'? Now it's more like 'Don't just a book by its synopsis' *lol* (ok, i know, that's weird and nerdy xp)

The plot was truly unique so it’s no question that I was captivated by it. A lifespan of 20 and 25 was really distressing. How can one suppose to enjoy life or rather how can one be able to know what life is? Marriage and pregnancy at 13? Polygamous rich men-boys? Psycho father-in-law? And stupid genetics? Yeah, it's all a perfect mix *lol* Love it all!

Rhine's character was something I liked about this book. I love how she's not letting the circumstances ruin her and get hold of her life. Loved that she kept on fighting and absolute about her goal which is to reach her brother. Her relationship with Linden and Gabriel was both confusing, but 'hey, that's the reason I (we) love reading YAs, right?'.

I really though that Linden was the villain in this book but it turns out to be the opposite, and I really don't know what to think of him. It sucks that he's so innocent and ignorant.

Jenna and Cecily, perfect sister wives. Thinking of them makes polygamous marriage a little not so bad.

So overall, it's really a nice read. And I really like how it ended, like it was saying "This is only the beginning."

How much I love it?

I really like this quote from a local writer, Bob Ong. It once had kept me from giving up some things that I truly love but what felt like something that everyone was against with. Keep on fighting for your dreams! Anyway, it says:
"People dream because they are given the ability to dream and fulfill it. It's their duty to make himself good and to contribute help to the world. And there is no bigger sin that he can do to himself aside from renouncing that duty..."

These were just a short review of the books that I skipped for some reasons. I decided to post some once every weekend until it's all up. Enjoy! ^^

ღSeries Specialღ
(Part 5)

The Lost Hero (Heroes of Olympus, #1)The Son of Neptune (Heroes of Olympus, #2)The Mark of Athena (The Heroes of Olympus, #3)

❧ My Rating : 4.5 Hearts
❧ Date Read : November 2012
❧ Heroes of Olympus... I rated the latter series with Percy Jackson a full 5.0 hearts, because there's not a single moment that I felt bored and I don't know - maybe not so excited. I loved the first one better than this current series. Please don't misunderstand, the Heroes of Olympus was one of my best reads ever, but I just can't help but compare it to the latter one. It's awesome and wonderful, I just loved the previous so much - I'm a loyal type, that's just how it was.

So maybe if I'll just let go of the comparing part, this series would be rated 5.0. I love Percy, and the first installment kept me waiting for so long for him to appear. I told you, I'm loyal. Still on Team Camp Half Blood, never gonna change even if Camp Jupiter turns to be so awesome.

Setting apart being a loyalist of PJ... I welcomed the new characters and mix ups. It's great to have new POV's to keep record on. Jason, Leo, Hazel, Piper, Frank, Reyna, Octavian and the other side of the gods was a total package to love. It had been an exciting read to remember.

The Son of Neptune. At last, my Percy's back to being on the spot! Loved that even he forgot everything, Annabeth was exempted. Romantic - very. Hazel and Frank's history and capabilities was both interesting and awesome.

Mark of Athena. Every time I hear this title, the first thing that comes to mind was the cliffhanger. Why?! Why does it have to end that way? When they finally met and things were starting to make sense, why? Well, at least, they fell together; I guess there wouldn't be a satyr chaperon to follow them around in tartarus.

I know most of you already had read this, so you probably know too how hard the wait for House of Hades (next installment) to finally come. It's on October 8. Going to read it as soon as I can get my hands on it. Urg! Can't wait!

I know I'm noisy! [#02] : This months art works :)

So I decided to post my artwork done this month to fulfill my long time promise to do so. So here they are:

❧ This one was entitled 'Bridge'. It's my entry for an art contest. Done this for ten hours straight O.o  My first trial on painting and joining contest in this medium.

❧ Another first, sculpture category entitled 'To Build a Man'. This is my first participation in any contest this college. Submitted this month. Worked on it for almost two months but on and off. (sorry for my messy table). Anyway, it's made of wires with a wooden base; depicting a human head with human figures around it. Please wish me luck :)

❧ This one's a school project. It's a watercolor painting of Chartres Cathedral. Done this with my two groupmates/friends. Cost us three sleepovers minus the sleeping part. If you had just seen us on the submission day, then you would know how to properly define a zombie *lol*

Warprize (Chronicles of the Warlands, #1)Warsworn (Chronicles of the Warlands, #2)Warlord (Chronicles of the Warlands, #3)

❧ Chronicles of the Warlands series by Elizabeth Vaughan
❧ My Rating : 5.0 hearts (first installment), 3.0 (last two books)
❧ Date Read : December 2012
❧ Warlands, it's been a long time since I've had read this series so I'll do the review as a whole, though I have a single review of the first book: Warprize.

The first book was a rapt while the latter books were also good, they're not on the same level with the first.

Xylara, the warprize, was a unique character, I remember loving her for that. She's reluctant but brave. Her situation was really hard but she manage to go through with it with flying colors. Anyway, a warprize is a person viewed valuable enough to stop a war. It was first interpreted as being slave to the other side but it turned out to be a real completely different role. I didn't expected that, I think that revelation was the highlight of the whole series.

Kier, the warlord, glad that he's open-minded and not pushy. Liked his strong character, not really my type but exactly fit for the portrait needed.

Warsworn as I remember it was their journey that leads to them being caught in a plague. Good thing that Xylara was a healer but turned out that she would also be affected by the deadly illness. The story started being boring there.

Warlord was when they were back on their homeland. She had to adapt on change and distrust around her. It became more focused on the romance part and lesser action.

The ending of the series was nice and sweet, a little funny too. It was a good read. Recommending this to younger readers.

[#22] Book Review: Let the Sky Fall - Shannon Messenger

Let the Sky Fall
(Sky Fall #1)

Let the Sky Fall (Sky Fall, #1)

Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Vane Weston has no idea how he survived the category five tornado that killed his parents. And he has no idea if the beautiful, dark-haired girl who’s swept through his dreams every night since the storm is real. But he hopes she is.

Seventeen-year-old Audra is a sylph, an air elemental. She walks on the wind, can translate its alluring songs, and can even coax it into a weapon with a simple string of commands. She’s also a guardian—Vane’s guardian—and has sworn an oath to protect Vane at all costs. Even if it means sacrificing her own life.

When a hasty mistake reveals their location to the enemy who murdered both of their families, Audra’s forced to help Vane remember who he is. He has a power to claim—the secret language of the West Wind, which only he can understand. But unlocking his heritage will also unlock the memory Audra needs him to forget. And their greatest danger is not the warriors coming to destroy them—but the forbidden romance that’s grown between them.

Review

Let the Sky Fall… It’s one of my reads that had taken a lot of work to finish. That’s about three weeks. Yes, three weeks! I couldn't be that patient with any other books but I say, this one’s worth it.

It has a very interesting story line that it would be a waste not to finish it and know what’s going to happen with all these screwed up characters.

The characters? Yeah, they were all screwed up. Their life, dilemmas, abilities and responsibilities makes them that way. So first there’s Vane, the last westerly living. The whole world depends on him and he doesn't even know that (okay, that’s a bit of exaggeration). He has the looks, humor and determination. I loved that he didn't turned out to be some pushy guy, pushing the girl he loves to love him back. We need more of guys like him. Loved that he’s not just patient but also senseful enough to know how to read between the lines when it comes to girls.

Audra, the girl whose suppose to protect Vane until he’s ready to take on the villains. She reeks of self pity, self deprivation and masochism, though the writer made it relatable even if there nothing I can relate about her (that kind of life just doesn't usually exist in our world, right? XD) She’s a fighter, by profession and by nature. I loved her for that. And also for giving in and being able to conduct change for someone she loves.

Some minor characters—Arella, not so motherly and a bit too bitchy for my taste. I didn't expect her involvement on the last parts. Hannah, the girl Vane had been dating – I feel sorry for her, the one time he’d been a real jerk. Raiden and Gales, I really don’t care what will happen to them.

The ending was great. The revelation was really unexpected. Loved that not all of my guesses happened. Sometimes, it’s also nice to be able to yell “what?! Why didn't I see that one coming?!”.

Overall, it’s a good book, just lacking some serious beats. Planning to read the next installment and recommending it for readers who like lots of negativity coming from the characters. :)

How much I loved it?

The Battle of the Labyrinth (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #4)The Last Olympian (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #5)

❧ My Rating : 5.0 Hearts
❧ Date Read : October 2012
❧ Percy Jackson, who doesn't know him?! So, these books was one of the most unexpected books I've had read. I read it because one of my classmates keeps on bugging me to read it, and it's free so I say why not. Even tried to delay it until it's the last thing on my shelf. Can't blame myself for doing so because for real, the synopsis was not much to be excited about. *Don't judge a book by its cover* Hell, yeah!

I didn't really expect to like it but as I continue to read, I just found myself lost on the pages. Can't find my way back and totally not planning to.

Days after being able to finish it, I found out that this series is on 'Children book' Shelving. There's a little inside jokes, my mind can't get over with about that fact. I fell for a children book! And I'm proud of it because it's PJ. So much for trying to act older on my first year in college.

Okay, for the record, the series is mythology themed with a mix of mystery, suspense, action, adventure, really cute/sweet romance, humor, friendship, family and I really think that I can go on forever. Just fill the spots.

The plot was amazing! I can blame that on the writing of Riordan for he seems to make simple events more interesting and intriguing than usual. Enjoyable and lovable too, for he woke up my kid's heart, all exciting and jumpy.

The characters. So who doesn't love Percy, Annabeth and Grover? And I have to admit that Mr. D was really amusing if not annoying. Percy and Annabeth cute love is one of the best thing that I long to happen and it finally did in the third book (not sure). "You drool on your sleep," one of the first thing that she said to him. LOL.

To sum these up, everything about the book was just amazing. The characters were great. The humor was hilarious. The adventure and dilemmas were all fun, brainy and exciting. The mythology theme was brilliant. You know I could really go on forever here =)

Anyway, just want to note that the movie version sucks. Nothing correctly interpreted. And the casting, PJ was about 12 on the lightning thief but he's like 16 or more in the movie. Annabeth was not even blonde! What's with all of that? So.. Yeah, I suggest that we just focus on the book (and the book alone).

This series is awesome! So if you haven't read it, I'm telling you now that you are missing a lot!

Evernight (Evernight, #1)Stargazer (Evernight, #2)Hourglass (Evernight, #3)Afterlife (Evernight, #4)

Evernight Series by Claudia Gray
❧ My Rating : 4.0 Hearts (on the first three), 3.0 Hearts (on the last one)
❧ Date Read : August 2012
❧ Since it has been a long time since I've read this series, I'll be reviewing it as a whole. So these books were on paranormal-romance genre. Vampires plus wraith (ghost) plus the vampire hunters. There's also a plus on mystery, betrayal, family and a lot of revelations.

So if there's something that I would never forget about this book, if would be the writings of Gray. I remembered admiring the way she was able to make me (reader) part of the story.  The narration was really good from start to finish.

The nature of the characters was epic. Bianca, as a born vampire (not full yet), Lucas, as vampire hunter, and some involvement of wraith. Bianca turned out to become a wraith on the last book. And that really sucks. Imagine having a relation with a ghost. Not so good, right?? And Lucas had been turned to a vampire then back to being human. And that's another sucker. I think these things all happen on the last installment because that's where my rating dropped.

And about the ending, it was Annoying with the capital 'A'! While Lucas was turned back to being human, Bianca was stuck in being a wraith for like forever. That totally ruined my fantasies and my heart!

So the final book sucked. Through, the first three books were really good and lovable. I don't really know what's with the author's mind when she decided to give that kind of finale. Though, I must admit that it really did shake me up. Good book, totally recommending it..

Twilight (Twilight, #1)New Moon (Twilight, #2)Eclipse (Twilight, #3)Breaking Dawn (Twilight, #4)

Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer
❧ My Rating : 5.0 Hearts
❧ Date Read : Year 2010
❧ Since it has been a long time since I've read this series, I'll be reviewing it as a whole. Well... we all know twilight right? It's either you loved it or hated it, and obviously I loved it. These books actually initiated me on reading foreign books.
Anyway, twilight saga is about a human girl (Bella) and a 'vegetarian' vampire (Edward) falling in love with each other, plus a werewolf (Jacob) as he has fallen in love with the human too. They underwent different dilemmas involving a group of vampire, Volturi and werewolves. Continuously saving Bella until they all had their happy endings.
First of all things that I loved with these books were the characters. I don't know if anyone would agree but I loved Alice more than any of the lead characters. The lead: Bella, Edward and Jacob. They were all too good to be true but I didn't realized that until now that I'd read a hundred books, like i had said this is my first series. Edward, I'd fallen in love with him automatically. He is 'beautiful' in a supernatural way (all the vampires here got a god-like appearance), old-fashioned( not to mention that he's 107 years old), can read minds (except Bella's) and all the other things you wish your boyfriend is. And here goes Bella, the 'fragile little human'; she's clumsy, pretty, stubborn and just the type to be linked with the supernaturals. And here's Jacob, the werewolf, he was supposed to be the alpha but chose to not take the position, he's the best friend of Bella though, not so content with that status. All of them were just too lovable for me.
Second, the story line. It's amazing (at 13), this kind of love triangle was all new to me during the time I've read it. The antagonist and the way they just want to get rid of Bella and the way they were all defeated especially on the last installment. The vampire - werewolf thing was also interesting to me. And how the Cullens' were all 'vegetarian' vampires - feed on animal blood instead of humans'. Though, it's entertaining how Bella threaten that status (laughs) .
Loved it all. I also happen to watch all of the movies. I collected some souvenir items too. And come to think of it, if I hadn't been so addicted with Twilight, this blog may not be existing just yet, so thanks to Meyer and her incredible writing^^

A pastor from the church I'm attending to once said that, we can make our vocation, our vacation if we just learn to love it and dedicate it to God...

Poems [#07] : Bow and Arrow

Bow and Arrow

Pain is the arrow buried in my heart,
Pain is how it felt when I saw you coming
With a bow and steady hands
While I kneel bleeding before your eyes.

Pain is the tight grip of memories,
Pain is the reality outside those memories
That no longer held your smiles and love
But your betrayal and hate instead.

Pain is receiving it from behind,
Pain is the absence of understanding,
Oh please, tell me why
For it's the reason it hurts the most.

Through the years that passed,
The pain never left,
The question never faded,
The answer still unheard.

But now you only belong in the past,
An unassembled puzzle covered in dust,
The one I could never bury
For I hold pieces of it in my palms.

Pieces I keep as a reminder,
A reminder never to trust too much,
A reminder of its consequences,
To keep me from repeating the same mistakes.

It's a shame, my shame
That you've had gotten my past
And still hold my future,
How can I steal it back, tell me.

They say, scars never fade
But what I have is a wound so fresh,
You see, I never let go of your arrow
I keep it here where you buried it.

Now, I remembered with wide eyes
The day I gave you that weapon
To protect or kill me
But you chose the latter.

Now, how am I suppose to trust?
When I can't even open my palms,
How am I suppose to let go?
When I'm too scared to trust again.

-Samantha A.

Touch of Power (Healer, #1)
❧ My Rating : 5.0 Hearts
❧ Date Read : Dec 26, 2012
❧ Hadn't gotten the chance to review before for this blog does not exist yet. Touch of Power... Read it twice, loving it twice ^^ Romance, adventure, fantasy and mystery, all in one book! I loved the characters, plot and author's writing.  Loved it all. It never failed to disappoint me. I have the review of it's second installment Scent of Magic here.

Artemis Fowl
Reason to Breathe (Breathing, #1)
❧ My Rating : 1.0
❧ Date Read : Dec 04, 2012
❧ Same reasons. Artemis Fowl ... Nothing special about the book. I skipped almost half of it. I got bored and couldn't really appreciate any part of the book. Maybe it just didn't suit me, I think it must be read by younger teens/kids. Not planning to read the next installment. Anyway, I don't remember books with fey theme that I liked, maybe that's one of the reasons I didn't like it.

Reason to Breathe by Rebecca Donovan
❧ My Rating : 4.0 Hearts
