Saturday Recollection [Short Reviews]

Books I Skipped Reviewing
Weekend treats
#009

These were just a short review of the books that I skipped for some reasons. I decided to post some once every weekend until it's all up. Enjoy! ^^

ღSeries Specialღ
(Part 5)

The Lost Hero (Heroes of Olympus, #1)The Son of Neptune (Heroes of Olympus, #2)The Mark of Athena (The Heroes of Olympus, #3)

❧ My Rating : 4.5 Hearts
❧ Date Read : November 2012
❧ Heroes of Olympus... I rated the latter series with Percy Jackson a full 5.0 hearts, because there's not a single moment that I felt bored and I don't know - maybe not so excited. I loved the first one better than this current series. Please don't misunderstand, the Heroes of Olympus was one of my best reads ever, but I just can't help but compare it to the latter one. It's awesome and wonderful, I just loved the previous so much - I'm a loyal type, that's just how it was.

So maybe if I'll just let go of the comparing part, this series would be rated 5.0. I love Percy, and the first installment kept me waiting for so long for him to appear. I told you, I'm loyal. Still on Team Camp Half Blood, never gonna change even if Camp Jupiter turns to be so awesome.

Setting apart being a loyalist of PJ... I welcomed the new characters and mix ups. It's great to have new POV's to keep record on. Jason, Leo, Hazel, Piper, Frank, Reyna, Octavian and the other side of the gods was a total package to love. It had been an exciting read to remember.

The Son of Neptune. At last, my Percy's back to being on the spot! Loved that even he forgot everything, Annabeth was exempted. Romantic - very. Hazel and Frank's history and capabilities was both interesting and awesome.

Mark of Athena. Every time I hear this title, the first thing that comes to mind was the cliffhanger. Why?! Why does it have to end that way? When they finally met and things were starting to make sense, why? Well, at least, they fell together; I guess there wouldn't be a satyr chaperon to follow them around in tartarus.

I know most of you already had read this, so you probably know too how hard the wait for House of Hades (next installment) to finally come. It's on October 8. Going to read it as soon as I can get my hands on it. Urg! Can't wait!

I know I'm noisy! [#02] : This months art works :)

So I decided to post my artwork done this month to fulfill my long time promise to do so. So here they are:

❧ This one was entitled 'Bridge'. It's my entry for an art contest. Done this for ten hours straight O.o  My first trial on painting and joining contest in this medium.

❧ Another first, sculpture category entitled 'To Build a Man'. This is my first participation in any contest this college. Submitted this month. Worked on it for almost two months but on and off. (sorry for my messy table). Anyway, it's made of wires with a wooden base; depicting a human head with human figures around it. Please wish me luck :)

❧ This one's a school project. It's a watercolor painting of Chartres Cathedral. Done this with my two groupmates/friends. Cost us three sleepovers minus the sleeping part. If you had just seen us on the submission day, then you would know how to properly define a zombie *lol*

Saturday Recollection [Short Review]

Books I Skipped Reviewing
Weekend treats
#008

These were just a short review of the books that I skipped for some reasons. I decided to post some once every weekend until it's all up. Enjoy! ^^

ღSeries Specialღ
(Part 4)

Warprize (Chronicles of the Warlands, #1)Warsworn (Chronicles of the Warlands, #2)Warlord (Chronicles of the Warlands, #3)

❧ Chronicles of the Warlands series by Elizabeth Vaughan
❧ My Rating : 5.0 hearts (first installment), 3.0 (last two books)
❧ Date Read : December 2012
❧ Warlands, it's been a long time since I've had read this series so I'll do the review as a whole, though I have a single review of the first book: Warprize.

The first book was a rapt while the latter books were also good, they're not on the same level with the first.

Xylara, the warprize, was a unique character, I remember loving her for that. She's reluctant but brave. Her situation was really hard but she manage to go through with it with flying colors. Anyway, a warprize is a person viewed valuable enough to stop a war. It was first interpreted as being slave to the other side but it turned out to be a real completely different role. I didn't expected that, I think that revelation was the highlight of the whole series.

Kier, the warlord, glad that he's open-minded and not pushy. Liked his strong character, not really my type but exactly fit for the portrait needed.

Warsworn as I remember it was their journey that leads to them being caught in a plague. Good thing that Xylara was a healer but turned out that she would also be affected by the deadly illness. The story started being boring there.

Warlord was when they were back on their homeland. She had to adapt on change and distrust around her. It became more focused on the romance part and lesser action.

The ending of the series was nice and sweet, a little funny too. It was a good read. Recommending this to younger readers.

[#22] Book Review: Let the Sky Fall - Shannon Messenger

Let the Sky Fall
(Sky Fall #1)

Let the Sky Fall (Sky Fall, #1)

Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Vane Weston has no idea how he survived the category five tornado that killed his parents. And he has no idea if the beautiful, dark-haired girl who’s swept through his dreams every night since the storm is real. But he hopes she is.

Seventeen-year-old Audra is a sylph, an air elemental. She walks on the wind, can translate its alluring songs, and can even coax it into a weapon with a simple string of commands. She’s also a guardian—Vane’s guardian—and has sworn an oath to protect Vane at all costs. Even if it means sacrificing her own life.

When a hasty mistake reveals their location to the enemy who murdered both of their families, Audra’s forced to help Vane remember who he is. He has a power to claim—the secret language of the West Wind, which only he can understand. But unlocking his heritage will also unlock the memory Audra needs him to forget. And their greatest danger is not the warriors coming to destroy them—but the forbidden romance that’s grown between them.

Review

Let the Sky Fall… It’s one of my reads that had taken a lot of work to finish. That’s about three weeks. Yes, three weeks! I couldn't be that patient with any other books but I say, this one’s worth it.

It has a very interesting story line that it would be a waste not to finish it and know what’s going to happen with all these screwed up characters.

The characters? Yeah, they were all screwed up. Their life, dilemmas, abilities and responsibilities makes them that way. So first there’s Vane, the last westerly living. The whole world depends on him and he doesn't even know that (okay, that’s a bit of exaggeration). He has the looks, humor and determination. I loved that he didn't turned out to be some pushy guy, pushing the girl he loves to love him back. We need more of guys like him. Loved that he’s not just patient but also senseful enough to know how to read between the lines when it comes to girls.

Audra, the girl whose suppose to protect Vane until he’s ready to take on the villains. She reeks of self pity, self deprivation and masochism, though the writer made it relatable even if there nothing I can relate about her (that kind of life just doesn't usually exist in our world, right? XD) She’s a fighter, by profession and by nature. I loved her for that. And also for giving in and being able to conduct change for someone she loves.

Some minor characters—Arella, not so motherly and a bit too bitchy for my taste. I didn't expect her involvement on the last parts. Hannah, the girl Vane had been dating – I feel sorry for her, the one time he’d been a real jerk. Raiden and Gales, I really don’t care what will happen to them.

The ending was great. The revelation was really unexpected. Loved that not all of my guesses happened. Sometimes, it’s also nice to be able to yell “what?! Why didn't I see that one coming?!”.

Overall, it’s a good book, just lacking some serious beats. Planning to read the next installment and recommending it for readers who like lots of negativity coming from the characters. :)

How much I loved it?

Books I Skipped Reviewing
Weekend treats
#007

These were just a short review of the books that I skipped for some reasons. I decided to post some once every weekend until it's all up. Enjoy! ^^

ღSeries Specialღ
(Part 3)

The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1)The Sea of Monsters (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #2)The Titan's Curse (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #3)
The Battle of the Labyrinth (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #4)The Last Olympian (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #5)

❧ My Rating : 5.0 Hearts
❧ Date Read : October 2012
❧ Percy Jackson, who doesn't know him?! So, these books was one of the most unexpected books I've had read. I read it because one of my classmates keeps on bugging me to read it, and it's free so I say why not. Even tried to delay it until it's the last thing on my shelf. Can't blame myself for doing so because for real, the synopsis was not much to be excited about. *Don't judge a book by its cover* Hell, yeah!

I didn't really expect to like it but as I continue to read, I just found myself lost on the pages. Can't find my way back and totally not planning to.

Days after being able to finish it, I found out that this series is on 'Children book' Shelving. There's a little inside jokes, my mind can't get over with about that fact. I fell for a children book! And I'm proud of it because it's PJ. So much for trying to act older on my first year in college.

Okay, for the record, the series is mythology themed with a mix of mystery, suspense, action, adventure, really cute/sweet romance, humor, friendship, family and I really think that I can go on forever. Just fill the spots.

The plot was amazing! I can blame that on the writing of Riordan for he seems to make simple events more interesting and intriguing than usual. Enjoyable and lovable too, for he woke up my kid's heart, all exciting and jumpy.

The characters. So who doesn't love Percy, Annabeth and Grover? And I have to admit that Mr. D was really amusing if not annoying. Percy and Annabeth cute love is one of the best thing that I long to happen and it finally did in the third book (not sure). "You drool on your sleep," one of the first thing that she said to him. LOL.

To sum these up, everything about the book was just amazing. The characters were great. The humor was hilarious. The adventure and dilemmas were all fun, brainy and exciting. The mythology theme was brilliant. You know I could really go on forever here =)

Anyway, just want to note that the movie version sucks. Nothing correctly interpreted. And the casting, PJ was about 12 on the lightning thief but he's like 16 or more in the movie. Annabeth was not even blonde! What's with all of that? So.. Yeah, I suggest that we just focus on the book (and the book alone).

This series is awesome! So if you haven't read it, I'm telling you now that you are missing a lot!
